Let’s uncover some of the reasons our skin isn’t looking so great and what we can do to change that.
1) Steam treatments. We all love a day at the spa or to relax in the steam room after a workout, however the effect on our skin is very damaging. Steam is water which has been raised to a temperature of 212 degrees – that’s extremely hot. When such a high temperature comes into contact with the skin it is very traumatic for the skin and can even burn the skin. It can even break down elasticity and collagen in the skin over time as well.
2) Lip balm. Lip balms like ChapStick are not moisturizers but are lubricants. A moisturizer introduces moisture to your skin while a lubricant forms a slick barrier on the skin which prevents moisture from reaching your skin. A few examples of moisturizers are Jojoba oil, Vitamin E, Shea butter. Examples of lubricants are mineral oil and petroleum. Ensure your lip balm has a high quality moisturizer as one of its first ingredients.
3) Waxing your facial hair. Facial waxing is a very common practice as most every woman wants smooth, gorgeous skin. The problem with facial waxing is that facial skin is very thin and delicate. When hair is ripped from its follicles it traumatizes the skin and causes microscopic bleeding. Over time this may lead to changes in pigmentation, rough patches and scarring.
4) Dehydration. Water plays an important role in every function of the human body. One of its roles is to flush the toxins from our bodies both through the skin as well as through the kidneys. Our bodies need at least 64 ounces of water per day. Without enough water bacteria, waste and impurities build up in our bodies and show up in the skin as dry, flaky skin, acne and premature lines and wrinkles. With enough water in our bodies our skin is plump and moist and bacteria is reduced and less likely to form acne and other skin impurities.
5) Cleaning with bare hands. The skin absorbs approximately 60% of what’s placed on to it. Which means that if you’re washing dishes, cleaning your counters and floors, dusting and polishing your furniture and other cleaning activities, and you’re not wearing gloves, your hands are exposed to hundreds of toxic ingredients. Some of these ingredients are cancer causing agents. While cancer may take several years to develop in your body there are other signs of distress in your skin, specifically in your hands, which may develop immediately: flaking skin, cracked cuticles, stiffness, peeling, itching or a rash.
