Our Declining Health: Processed Foods Aren’t Really Food

Before processed foods, the human body did everything it was supposed to do. Natural foods from the environment went in, the body recognized and digested the foods, absorbed the nutrition which kept the immune system in shape and then discarded the rest. This complex, yet simple process has kept mankind alive since the beginning of time, until the recent shift in modern times to processed food.

One thing that has gone hand in hand with the advent of processed foods in modern diets is illness. Increases in cancers, autoimmune diseases that never existed throughout history and even some mental health conditions have seemed to appear at the same time these non-foods have become mainstream in the human diet.

There are many reasons that processed foods can be causing so many health problems for society. The first explanation is that they contain numerous chemicals and artificial products that our bodies were never meant to ingest. The human body, throughout history, functioned and sustained life when natural foods were its primary source of nourishment. Today, it is being overrun by products that are created in a laboratory, not found in a natural setting. The addition of all of these harmful extras found in processed food cannot be ignored as a health risk.

Another reason why processed foods are unhealthy is that they truly aren’t real food. Our bodies receive them and, quite frankly, don’t have much use for them. They are devoid of nutrition to absorb, usually containing dead forms of fruits and vegetables (if they have them at all). If a processed food doesn’t have nutritional benefits, the immune system can’t be nourished and strengthened. A weak immune system is the key to acquiring diseases, so it doesn’t require much stretch of the imagination to see what an impact processing foods can have on overall health.

Processed foods are also hard on digestion. Made for convenience, with no concern for health, digestive systems are in flux trying to break down these foreign food substances. Instead of eliminating processed food from the diet, however, humans try to suppress indigestion symptoms running to their medicine cabinets for antacids and other dangerous pharmaceuticals that interrupt natural digestion even more. In addition, some try to make up for the lack of nutrients by taking a multivitamin, not recognizing that with their digestive system in such an unhealthy state, most of that supplement will pass through without being properly absorbed, providing no boost to immunity.

The tragedy in all of this is that we are fortunate enough to be able to still survive without processed foods in these modern times. Avoiding them could improve health and vitality for people everywhere. But instead of avoidance of the harmful foods, science spends time and money trying to market products to reduce the discomfort caused by eating processed food, so that those seeking convenience in these fast-paced times can continue consuming these foods every day.

Mankind has survived to this point without the need for processed food. The human body, when given something to eat, had just the right amount of acid to break down the food, and a functioning digestive system to ensure the body absorbed all of the nutritional benefits. Everything worked as it should. Processed foods, in contrast, play a dangerous game with the human body which is impacting health in many negative ways.
