Vegetables are a very healthy food group. Doctors are always saying eat plenty of vegetables. This is very true, but some vegetables are not good for patients who suffer from gout. Some of these vegetables could be classified as being high uric acid foods. You may be surprised on some of the vegetables that are indeed high in purines.
For those of you who don’t know what purines are, I will explain them right here. Purines are in our body naturally and they are in the foods we eat. Usually foods with a high amount of protein contain the most purines. When our bodies break down the purines uric acid is produduced as a by-product of this action. So basically, the more purines you body has to break down the more uric acid is produced by your body.
Spinach is one of these vegetables. It is hard to believe because as a child I’m sure your parents always tried to force you to eat spinach. Remember Popeye, he would get extra energy and become stronger by eating spinach. Though spinach is packed with vitamins it just isn’t a great choice for people who are suffering from gout. Spinach has oxalates and oxalates crystallize making your body produce more uric acid.
Asparagus is another vegetable. Asparagus has a high-level of purines. The purines make your level of uric acid raise which in effect makes the gout symptoms come back and offsets your gout.
Mushrooms have a high level of purines too. When the level of purines are high in the vegetable, then these increases the uric acid production in your body and this is why mushrooms is one of the vegetables that is not recommended for gout suffers. Cauliflower is another one of those high in purine vegetable. Peas and beans are also high in purines as well.
Even though all these vegetables are great for many people they just may make your uric acid levels raise because of the high purines found in all these vegetables. Odd that someone would say don’t eat spinach, broccoli or cauliflower. You can maybe try it, but just don’t make a habit of eating these that often.
I will be difficult to tell if one specific food is causing your gout to flare up. If you are eating the basic foods you always eat without a problem, try introducing a new one, one at a time so it will be easier to single out what food might be setting of a gout attack. But just be aware of the foods you are eating on a daily basis.
